What kind of talent does the future workplace need? In the AI era, mastering knowledge alone is no longer sufficient. How to use technology, cross disciplinary boundaries, and turn ideas into deployable solutions are important issues university students face. PolyU's "Education 4.0" is student-centered, integrating AI, interdisciplinary learning, experiential education, and international elements into undergraduate education, giving students exposure to new technology, interdisciplinary knowledge, and real application scenarios, thinking about how to apply technology in their fields, cultivating a new generation with innovative thinking, digital literacy, professional knowledge, and social responsibility. Since the 2022/23 academic year, "Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics" (AIDA) and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" (IE) have been incorporated into PolyU's undergraduate core curriculum, building students' data analysis, innovative thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
Third-year student Dora Saylikoglu from Turkey received a PolyU entrance scholarship and the "Belt and Road Scholarship" to study in Hong Kong, majoring in Applied Physics with a minor in AIDA. For him, being able to combine AI with physics was one of the important reasons he chose PolyU. Dora believes AI will play an important role in future scientific development and hopes to explore AI applications in physics and even rocket science. "If I can integrate AI into it, I have a chance to be at the forefront of technological innovation in physics and rocket science." Beyond classroom learning, Dora also expanded his global perspective through overseas exchange opportunities provided by PolyU. He is currently exchanging at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, studying physics and quantum computing-related subjects. PolyU provides an additional HK$30,000 overseas exchange subsidy to all undergraduates receiving academic entrance scholarships, supporting them to study and exchange around the world. Dora also plans to participate in research internships at universities or research centers, applying what he learned in physics and quantum computing classes to research work. He hopes to continue pursuing a master's degree in physics after graduation, further exploring AI applications in physics and rocket science.
The learning journey of Leung Ming-fong, a graduate of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, reflects how students build problem-solving ability through real industry projects. Since his first year, Leung joined the Engineering Entrepreneurship Society founded by Professor Tan Huayao, Chair Professor of Photonics in PolyU's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, participating in local and international robot design and assembly competitions with students from different disciplines, and trying to solve practical engineering problems raised by enterprises. He later participated in a generator inspection robot project cooperated between PolyU and CLP Power, entering power generation facilities to understand the operation and maintenance needs of large generators, then jointly developing with professors and classmates a "generator inspection robot" applicable to real scenarios.
Leung recalled that when he first entered the power generation facility, he truly understood how classroom knowledge applies to large infrastructure and energy systems, and it made him think about how engineering technology responds to the industry's actual needs. "When I participated in competitions before, I focused more on the technical level, but after接触 real application scenarios, I began to think from the user's and industry's perspective." He said the biggest gain from the project was not just technical knowledge, but learning to think from the user's and industry's perspective through repeated testing, improvement, and problem-solving. The project won a Gold Medal and a Special Grand Prize at the 51st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions—the Best International Invention Award and Innovation Award presented by Thailand's National Research Council. After graduation, he chose to stay on the PolyU team as a research assistant, continuing to develop in research and development.
Dora explored the combination of AI, physics, and rocket science through interdisciplinary learning; Leung understood how engineering technology responds to industry needs through real industry projects. Their experiences reflect how "PolyU Education 4.0" emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, practical education, and international perspective to help students explore interests, build problem-solving abilities, and prepare for future development. The "PolyU Undergraduate Admission Information Day" will be held this Saturday. This year's event will be held on October 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the PolyU campus. The day features admission and program talks, consultation activities, alumni and student sharing, workshops, exhibitions, and guided tours of teaching facilities and laboratories, letting students and parents learn about the latest undergraduate programs and admission information.
